What You Need to Know About Moving to the DMV

Moving to Washington DC

Think “DMV” means the Department of Motor Vehicles? Not around here! In this region, it stands for DC, Maryland, and Virginia—a dynamic, interconnected area packed with vibrant communities, each with its own unique charm.

I’ve had the pleasure of calling all three home. My DMV journey began in 2010 in Old Town Alexandria, VA. From there, I hopped over to DC’s Mt. Vernon Square (nestled between Shaw and Chinatown), then settled into Del Ray, VA. A job move took my family to Takoma Park, MD, and now we’re happily rooted in Silver Spring’s Sherwood Forest neighborhood.

Having lived—and owned real estate—all around the Beltway, I’ve got the inside scoop! Here’s your quick-start guide to getting to know the DMV and making the most of your new community.

DC: A One-of-a-Kind Urban Experience

Living in DC is like stepping into a living postcard, with world-class museums, an unbeatable food scene, and endlessly walkable neighborhoods. Some of my favorites? Capitol Hill, Brookland, Kalorama, NoMa, and Cleveland Park.

Suburban Perks Without Losing the Buzz

Craving more space, a bigger yard, and a slightly slower pace? You don’t have to give up walkability or city vibes! Some lively suburban downtowns worth checking out include:

  • Maryland: Bethesda, Hyattsville, Kensington, Rockville, and Frederick
  • Virginia: Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, and Fairfax

Outdoor Adventures Galore

Love fresh air and scenic trails? The DMV is a dream for outdoor lovers! Some of my favorites include:

  • Capital Crescent Trail (DC/MD) – Great for biking and long walks
  • Mount Vernon Trail (VA) – Stunning waterfront views
  • Sligo Creek Trail (MD) – A peaceful escape through the trees

Stay Cool & Stay Active

Beat the heat and meet your neighbors at one of the area’s standout pools:

  • Wilson Aquatic Center (DC)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Swim Center (MD)
  • Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility (VA)

Commuting Made Easy

Beyond the Metro, there are plenty of ways to get around:

  • MARC Train: Connects DC to Baltimore and beyond, with stops at Union Station, New Carrollton, and BWI Airport.
  • Virginia Railway Express (VRE): A solid commuter option from places like Fredericksburg and Manassas into DC.

Fuel Up with Great Coffee

A good coffee shop can make a neighborhood feel like home. Some favorites include:

  • The Coffee Bar (DC)
  • Vigilante Coffee (MD)
  • Misha’s Coffee (VA)

And if your dream neighborhood doesn’t have a corner café, I swear by the Breville Bambino espresso machine for top-notch lattes at home!No matter where you land in the DMV, you’re in for a treat—urban energy, charming neighborhoods, and endless ways to explore. So jump in, start discovering, and enjoy everything this amazing region has to offer. Welcome home!
